Help! The Huevos Rancheros gang have stolen gold and are camped out in the buildings of Mystery Word Town. Your child gets to assist a ghostly sheriff by conducting a room to room search of each of the buildings – until the gold is recovered and the criminals are captured. Six-shooters are not required, but a willingness to spell comes in handy. That’s because as players move from room to room, they collect letters and insert them into incomplete words. When a word is completed, a new room becomes accessible for them to explore. There’s gold in each building, and when a player finds all of the gold in the building, a criminal is captured: another one down for the Huevos Rancheros gang. [Read more…]
Bugs and Numbers was released way back in 2012, but this app continues to shine. This app covers an array of math skills – 18 games in all, divided into 3 groups. The first group of activities targets preschoolers, the second targets kindergarteners, and the third group targets grades 1 and 2. Each activity takes place in a different location inhabited by bugs. The bugs are realistic and positively fascinating. The locations are beautifully composed in a whimsical, restrospective style. Throughout it all, kids engage in math skills such as counting, matching, sorting, adding, subtracting, estimating, measuring, telling the time, fractions and more. After children successfully complete an activity they get a new bug for their cardboard bug box. [Read more…]
The book app, Snow White by Nosy Crow, is a smart, and sometimes hilarious take of a classic fairy tale. In true Nosy Crow style, this app features vibrant illustrations. It preserves the key elements of the classic story, but removes the scary stuff (gone are any references to bringing her heart back to the queen). A modern sensibility persists, and the results are often hilarious (my favourite: the time Snow White refuses the queen’s poisoned cupcake because she just brushed her teeth). The interactivity is well-placed: for example, children can rock their iPad to put baby Snow White to sleep or, later in the story, they may help the stepmother make her poisoned brew. This app is a healthy brew of vibrant illustration, a modern sensibility, and clever interactive moments. It promises to pull your child into a magical world of reading and storytelling. [Read more…]
Metamorphabet is a app about the alphabet. Kids can touch or drag a letter on each “flashcard” to watch it morph into a sequence of images that begin with the letter’s sound. For instance, poke the letter the letter B and watch it grow a beard. Prod it again and a beak pops out. Tap the beak and a bevy of beautiful bugs fly out. The transformations are wacky, humourous and totally engaging.
The Little Bug is an interactive, 28-page story about a blue caterpillar and the insects it encounters in a garden. Children and parents will enjoy the stellar graphics and the abundance of interactive elements. This story celebrates the diversity and ingenuity of nature. It also empowers children to reflect on their own talents.
