Help! The Huevos Rancheros gang have stolen gold and are camped out in the buildings of Mystery Word Town. Your child gets to assist a ghostly sheriff by conducting a room to room search of each of the buildings – until the gold is recovered and the criminals are captured. Metamorphabet is a app about the alphabet. Kids can touch or drag a letter on each “flashcard” to watch it morph into a sequence of images that begin with the letter’s sound. For instance, poke the letter the letter B and watch it grow a beard. Prod it again and a beak pops out. Tap the beak and a bevy of beautiful bugs fly out. The transformations are wacky, humourous and totally engaging.
Duck Duck Moose Reading contains nine different activities, each featuring cartoon animals in vibrant, playful settings. The activities cover the very basics of reading: recognizing letters and the sounds they make.
In Letter Tracing, children practice writing letters. Children trace letters with their finger, in a specific order, and when a letter is successfully completed, they get to pop balloons. Each lesson is reinforced by an onscreen pencil demonstrating the process and a silly rhyme about each letter. There are some fun supplemental activities, such as letter colouring, to provide variety. This is a simple and effective app with great illustrations.
