Millie & The Lost Key is part of series of book apps about a dog named Millie. The first one, Meet Millie, is free – so try it out before purchasing the rest. Millie is a dog on an wacky mission, a quest to find the key to endless bacon. This journey is ostensibly a doggie walk through Central Park. Told from Millie’s perspective, however, the walk is anything but sedate. Millie is the Indiana Jones of the canine world, in a frenzy of motion and danger, as she searches for her holy grail: the key to endless bacon. On her way, she encounters a crazy cast of characters, including a unicorn, piranhas, pirates and a rogue cat.
The app’s tongue-in-cheek humour is aimed at parents. Kids should enjoy the sheer silliness of it all. There are plenty of interactive moments, including opportunities to collect stickers, press buttons, and play mini-games. The scrapbook aesthetic really works: graphics are nicely juxtaposed with photographs, and even video clips. The writing quality is average – an ongoing issue in the world of digital publishing – but visuals and interactivity generally make up for it.
